Lily Le Blanc prepares for our end of year Burlesque Showcase
Enjoy another post in my ongoing series of exceptionally sporadic posts - catching up with performers who are embarking on the Act Development Course.
This year, I’ve been able to offer this course in two parts of the year, with performers being able to choose to work to a solo performance at our mid year or end of year Burlesque Showcase.
This week, I caught up with Lily Le Blanc - who you might have seen on stage before! She has been preparing some new work to share at our end of year showcase.
Lily has a strong background and dance, which drew her initially to burlesque.
My background in dance has always been a big part of who I am. I love the costumes, the sequins, different characters, the hair and make-up.
The opportunity to perform on stage is a great release for my creative side. Being able to reinvent myself and allow a different persona to take over is both liberating and fun.
Burlesque gives me the freedom to express myself in an inclusive safe environment among amazing fun loving, creative like-minded people. What more could you ask for!?
The dynamics that bring people to develop a solo and bring that side of themselves to the stage always interest me. I love hearing about the different motivators and drivers. As Lily says,
As I have gotten older I have become more comfortable in my own skin and feel less of a need to hide in a group on stage where I am not the only person to look at. I enjoy the creativity and excitement of the process which leads to a sense of accomplishment once I step off the stage. It has an empowering impact for me.
Now here comes the part where I ask performers to give their best tips or advice to anyone thinking about breaking into that solo debut.
What advice would you give to aspiring performers?
Its all about having fun! Don’t take it too seriously.
Just do it. It really could change your life. Don’t overthink it and have fun!
What’s the biggest myth or misconception about burlesque?
That you need to look or act a certain way.
What are you most looking forward to about the performance?
The atmosphere and the sense of fun that the audience brings to a show. The backstage buzz.
