Returning to burlesque classes? How can you get the most out of your experience?
What are you getting out of your burlesque classes?
If you are returning time and time again, (which as a teacher I love!), I can appreciate that sometimes you need new goals and ways to stay motivated.
I love seeing students that come back for a repeat course. We have many students that return year after year because they love the community and love the time they get to spend being their best sparkly selves
But when you might be coming back as a veteran student, always feel like you can have a chat with your teacher to make sure you are getting the most out of your experiences. Because we all need to have goals and dreams for ourselves.
It could be stuff you might be able to do on your own:
Letting go of the steps and focusing on how the movements feel, starting to really tune into your own body
Communicating with your eyes and your face, focusing on how you can perform and not just go through the motions
Having a bit of a mini practice session in your home.
And even things like expanding your horizons – like taking a dance class in another style; reading or learning more about burlesque and its history.
Or it might be some short and medium goals that you can talk to your teacher (s) about. There are so many facets to burlesque – from performing, the behind the scenes, the costuming, the event management. So you might want to think about where else you can develop:
Learning about producing events and seeing if you can shadow someone for an event
Helping organise costumes, or build costume pieces with other students
Being a backstage helper or stagehand at events
There are so many ways that you might want to grow as a student or as an emerging performer that can complement whatever you are doing in class.
It’s always good – especially at the start of a new year or new course – to have some ideas in mind that can keep you motivated and engaged, especially as you get more confident and become a mini ‘pro’ in your classes.
If you’ve tried this I’d love to hear about it!
