How to give yourself great feedback

It’s really important that you can take time out to give yourself genuine constructive feedback. I’ve written before about taking audience applause and adoration with a grain of salt.

So I really wanted to share how I like to give myself some self reflection - and improve.

I know who I give a shit about

I have like 4 performers and mentors whose opinions I trust and who really matter to me. Okay maybe 6. So if I really want some feedback I know who I’ll go to and who will give me really critical, constructive feedback if I need it.

I keep a journal

It’s no Anne Frank. But I keep a journal and some notes just about performing. If I get some great ideas or a thought about a show I’ve done, I like to jot it straight down so that it isn’t stuck in my head. Particularly if I’m not happy with something, it lets me let go of that thought. It’s really variable but some ideas you might think about jotting down:

  • I was proud of the way I handled the rowdy front row

  • I practised for 10 minutes today

  • I maintained eye contact for the first time

By doing this really basic exercise you are not only working towards a process of self-affirming, but if you do a physical diary you will end up with pages of good shit that you have done. You can then look back on all the things you (yes YOU!) are proud of, which can be super positive when you have those moments of self doubt.

Let me know if any of these tips work out for you!
